Plans
Twenty sheets of paper, printed front and back makes 40 pages; includes description, liability release, part list, sources, drawings for all pieces (except ones used as cut), subassembly, weldments and assembly, some photos and jigs. Dimensions and shape are shown for all parts, weldments, subassemblies and assemblies. Adjustments, installation, lubrication and sources for some parts are included.
This is a difficult and demanding project to build correctly. The welds must be done strong enough to hold everything together, the pins must all be parallel to prevent wearing out the bearings, the hammer head must be aligned to the anvil correctly so the dies will hit evenly, the tire and crank must be properly positioned to line up with the arms-links-crosshead toggle mechanism and guides. You must use a solid steel anvil, at least 6" in diameter, larger is better. The dies should be good quality tool steel and heat treated properly or they will be soft and deform or too hard and break into fragments and fly to pieces.
If you make changes, you should carefully evaluate the effect on mating parts, hammer operation, weight and strength as unforeseen problems may be the result.
Over 1000 hammers have been built in workshops using this design and all are working well with only few minor problems reported such as loose bolts, wires burned by hot steel and small welds breaking. I have no idea how many hammers have been built from the hundreds of plans that have been bought.
The plans are $30US. Send a Paypal for $30US to clay@tirehammer.com. I will email you a set of PDFs. Or send me a check or money order with your address to Clay Spencer, 73 Penniston Pvt. Drive, Somerville, AL 35670. A copy can be mailed if necessary.
The plans are emailed as PDF. Plans are not available on CD or metric. I try to email as soon as I see your payment. Do not accept credit cards, other ways of payment, do not like Western Union but it works.
The plans are copyrighted material, it is illegal to make copies, sell or give copies to others. You are allowed to make a copy for your use in your shop.
If copies are returned in good condition, $27 will be refunded if you decide you do not like the plans,, unwilling to accept the liability in building a hammer or would have too much trouble building a hammer.
With prices going up so much in 2021, it is impossible to estimate the cost of building a hammer. They weigh 700 to 1000 lb. and require a motor and a few other costly parts. We have made them in workshops for under $1000, but in 2021 they are costing over $2000 to $3000 or more. Still a great bargain.
